On 6 August 1945, the USAAF crew of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress “Enola Gay” dropped “Little Boy,” the nuclear device that devastated Hiroshima, killing at least 135,000 of its inhabitants.
Here is a link to a photo of Jim Lovell all suited up for Apollo 13. Note the red stripes on the sleeves of his extravehicular pressure garment assembly. They were added for this mission to help ground control technicians to identify the two astronauts while walking on the Moon's surface. This little change shows astonishing attention to detail for a mission which NASA executives knew would be presented to the world as a terrifying ordeal but which would involve no faked lunar landing. After all, why add the stripes if the astronauts won't even be pretending to be on the Moon.
One may wonder why they didn't come up with a more obvous and more dramatic story for their hoax emergency. Imagine for a moment that instead of the explosion in transit that two astronauts become stuck on the Moon's surface. Their LM refuses to launch then back into lunar orbit. How will they save theirselves? OMG, will the guy in orbit have to abandon them there? This is high drama.
It so happens that the red stripes of the commander's suit can be removed and used to fix up a broken important part of the LM. The fix is made, the astronauts luanch back into orbit, and this story, too, has happy ending. Hooray! Give a medal to each of the guys who added the commander stripes. What incredible foresight they had to make the material useful in multiple ways.
A nice benefit of this other story is that no one at NASA or its contractors comes off looking inept because they weren't smart enough to equip the LM and the CSM with identical, interchangeable cannisters of carbon dioxide scrubbers. So instead of a clever drama which pokes the rubes in their eyes hard, we have a story in which the astronauts macguyver a contraption to adapt the incompatible parts.
In connection with current affairs, I found it quite striking that neither Israel nor the US threatened Iran with the use of nukes, nor does Iran seem fazed by that prospect in the least.
For other readers, I would like to add that Hans helped me substantially with my book, particularly with the last chapter, which deals with the historical and political context.
You're too kind. The Emperor has no clothes, really. Too bad most people do not realize that, engrossed as they are with social media, and too much affected by all the poison they read, watch, inhale, eat, drink and put on their skin.

There are no nuclear weapons, it’s only government fraud to aid control via fear.

Simple...God is simple...truth is simple...For the longest time I thought those cities were Dresdened, Grüß Gott!
Interesting conjecture.
Thank you, Hans! Much appreciated.

But both implied as much.
Well said. Brave article
